How to Get More Leads as an Australian Tradie (2026 Playbook)

Every tradie wants more leads. Most are chasing the wrong tactics — spending money on things that won’t move the needle, and ignoring the ones that will.

Here are the 6 tactics that actually work for Australian tradies in 2026, ranked by effort-to-reward. Start at #1 and work down. Don’t skip steps.

1. Fix your Google Business Profile (2 hours, huge payoff)

This is the single biggest leverage point for any local tradie. Your Google Business Profile is what shows up in the local pack when someone searches “plumber near me” — and 80% of tradie leads in Australia come from this map, not from your website directly.

What to do: claim your profile if you haven’t, verify it, then fill in everything. Hours, services, area served, 10+ photos of your work (not stock images), 5 photos of your team and vans, your exact services with descriptions, and your website URL.

Then post once a week. Any real post — a recent job, a promo, a tip — tells Google your profile is active, and Google ranks active profiles higher.

Target: 50+ Google reviews in 6 months. Which brings us to…

2. Ask every single customer for a review (ongoing, huge payoff)

Reviews are the main ranking factor for local search. A plumber with 200 reviews will beat one with 30 reviews, all else equal. But most tradies ask once, get no response, and give up.

The fix is an automated SMS after every completed job: “Hey Dan — thanks for letting us fix the hot water today. If you have 30 seconds, would you mind leaving us a Google review? [link]. It genuinely helps us a lot.”

Tools like ReviewBolt or our own review automation add-on send these automatically. Conversion rate on SMS requests is about 20%. Do 50 jobs a month, get 10 reviews a month, reach 120 reviews in a year — and dominate local search.

3. Build suburb pages for every area you work in (one-off project, compounds over time)

Most tradie websites have one “Areas we serve” page listing 30 suburbs. Google doesn’t rank that for “plumber Parramatta” — it ranks pages that are specifically about Parramatta.

The fix: a dedicated page for each major suburb. Unique content, local landmarks mentioned, pictures of your work in that area, reviews from customers in that suburb. 800-1200 words minimum.

This is a lot of work if you’re doing it manually. A 5-page suburb bundle takes us about 3 days and costs $790. Within 60-90 days those pages start ranking for “plumber [suburb]” and pulling a steady 5-15 enquiries a month per suburb.

4. Run Google Local Services Ads (paid, fast, works)

Google Local Services Ads (not regular Google Ads — different product) show at the very top of local search results with a “Google Guaranteed” badge. You pay per lead, not per click, and you only pay when someone contacts you.

You need to be licensed, insured, and pass Google’s background check. Once you’re in, expect to pay $30-80 per booked job in most trades — which is usually a fraction of the job value.

Start with a $500/week budget in your busiest suburb. Scale up based on what works. Track every lead back to its source so you know your real cost per customer.

5. Get a modern website that actually converts (one-off, compounds forever)

All of the above drives traffic to your site. If your site then loads in 6 seconds and looks like 2012, 60% of that traffic evaporates before reaching your phone.

A modern site fixes the leak: fast load, click-to-call, clear headline, real reviews, lead form on every page. We build these for $199 + $99/month. Live in 7 days. You’d be shocked how much it changes the conversion rate of your existing traffic — often double overnight.

6. Referral incentives for past customers (slow burn, high quality)

The highest-quality tradie leads come from referrals. Past customers recommending you to their mate is worth 10 cold Google clicks.

The mistake most tradies make is not asking. Set up a simple program: $50 off their next service for any referral that becomes a booked job. Send it as an SMS every 6 months to your database. Low effort, high return.

What not to bother with

Some things you’ll see advised that don’t move the needle for a local tradie:

  • Paid Facebook ads as a primary channel — can work for big-ticket work (solar, bathroom renos) but mostly a money pit for everyday trade work.
  • Instagram Reels — fun to make, rarely convert to booked jobs. Only worth it if you have time to burn.
  • Cold flyer drops — conversion is measured in tenths of a percent. Same money in Google LSAs works 10× harder.
  • TikTok — unless you’re genuinely entertaining, skip.
  • Yellow Pages — gone. Stop paying.

The actual order to do this in

Week 1-2: Fix your Google Business Profile. Ask every customer for reviews.
Week 3-6: Upgrade your website if it’s more than 3 years old.
Month 2-3: Add suburb pages for your top 3-5 areas.
Month 3+: Once the above is working, layer on Google Local Services Ads.

Don’t skip to step 5. It’s the shiny one, but without the foundations it’s wasted spend.
